I chatted with one of the Adobe engineers that worked on the unloadAndStop API, and I thought it would be helpful to post a summary of what I know about it, and disseminate some of the information he provided. I'll also try to answer some of the more common questions about it.
Two days ago, Adobe released Beta 2 of Flash Player 10. With it came a number of enhancements, bug fixes and new features. Linux users got a much more even playing field. But the one that I think will have the most impact on my day to day Flash work with Flash Player 10: unloadAndStop — [...]
Astro is getting closer to a release. A new beta version is out and you can read the announcement on Adobe’s site: http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/flashplayer10/. Please read also the release notes here: http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/flashplayer10/releasenotes.html. What is new? To be short… Fullscreen Keyboard Access - now you can catch key events for non-printing keys (arrows, shift, enter, tab, space, etc) Enhanced Audio [...]
Was interested to read that in the latest Flash Player 10 beta refresh a number of issues have been fixed that were real showstoppers for Linux users. Most notably webcam support has always been problematic, which meant that that devices like the Nokia N800, the Eee PC and many others could not take full advantage [...]
I was considering going myself at FlashOnTheBeach 2008, but now that they took me as a speaker I have no choice. I was an attendace of the first edition of the conference and I missed the two others. So I'm glad to be part of this awesome event. Moreover there'll be a lot of friends to meet and to party with.
Steve Yegge makes me feel stupid. There I’ve said it. I’ve come clean and can move on and admit there’s a whole lot I don’t know about development. Actually, I’m going to have to go one step further and admit I know very little about development which is depressing. This biz is a time sink; [...]
Adobe has announced the addition of the new Loader.unloadAndStop() method for Flash Player 10. This API makes it much simpler to free a loaded SWF for collection. It's still possible to prevent a SWF from being unloaded, but it's much more difficult to do by accident. Kudos to the player team for putting this in.
Today i bring you two tutorials showing how to export either from Blender or 3D Max Studio, as also a cool place for getting free 3D models which you can use to test your PV3D skills. So Adobe created a special version of Flash player for Google and Yahoo to index SWF files. This basically goes through your SWF and magically figures out what to click on and how to interact with your application, just like a real person would do. How does it do it? Here’s what I think is [...]
I previously mentioned the BBC adopting AIR for widgets, but this little nugget in the paidContent story is worth highlighting: "In October [the BBC] signed a technology deal with Adobe to adopt its Flash [for video]... finally axing Microsoft's WMV and Real's video formats in favour of embedded [Flash] video, causing video views to double."
Build, steal, buy, or borrow… These would be the four basic ways you can make your applications a reality, pretty much regardless of the language you develop in. Flash and Flex development is no different in this regard. Building will get you what you want, provided you have the skills to do it, but could take [...]
Just finished a new version of the WiiFlashServerJ to keep up with the great PC version, by Thibault Imbert and Joa Ebert. Besides from adding the cross domain policy functionality, the mac version has also experienced some other small updates: + More then one connected Flash client can receive Wiimote input now + Changed setting the LED [...]
Google and Adobe have been working together for a while to get SWF content indexed and today, the announcement that this is finally occurring has come to fruition. The good news: Embedded text and text deriving from external files are now being indexed and are searchable through Google. The bad news: Any content loaded from a server [...]
This is a great news! I’ve been waiting for this to happen for a long time. If you don’t believe me that Google is indexing flash try to search on Google by this kind of phrases: “flex filetype:swf“; and you’ll get a list of SWF files that were indexed by Google. How does Google do this? [...]
Adobe has announced new technologies that will allow SWF content to be indexed and searchable, not just text in the SWF, but also data generated programatically and at runtime. Google is the first to leverage this new ability, and some great Google-centric context can be found on the Google Webmaster Central Blog entry entitled Improved Flash Indexing.
OK, the news today is that Adobe is working with Google and Yahoo! to make sure they are able to index SWF content fully. That’s pretty exciting and a real step in the good direction but it does leave me with a bunch of questions and concerns. Reportedly Google and Yahoo! have been given a ’special, [...]
I’m just curious if flv / h.264 cuePoints / timed-text tracks, captions and other metadata will actually be picked up by the search engines now? I’m guessing based on “the dance” here that we can’t expect any actual deep linking to automagically appear. Right now we’re being spoon fed information. What I’m hoping to hear soon are [...]
Ryan and the Adobe team just let the world know that SEO is no longer the elephant in the room when it comes to Flash goodness. I’m obviously not in the loop and can’t add much, but it was curious that Adobe, by the looks of the announcement, is not collaborating with Microsoft. Google and [...]
I got an email from Thomas Joos tonight saying he had something I might be interested in, and you’re not wrong there! Using the b.Tween framework (currently in beta) which in turn uses barefootsoft’s EyeGT technology they were able to port mobile content, in this case a Flash Lite app to the iPhone. While that [...]
