Dear Rands, you are an asshole. You’re too funny and keep stealing all of my most private thoughts and posting them on twitter. ;-) Seriously, I get so tired of all of the agile consulting gurus peddling their snake oil. Nothing makes up for having a game plan, knowing your market and customers and having refined [...]
Mike Kavis, Chief Architect at Information Technology Toolbox, has written a comprehensive and balanced analysis of Flex/Flash versus Silverlight entitled The Battle for the RIA Throne: Flex vs. Silverlight.
Fellow Adobe Platform Evangelist Lee Brimelow has written an article for Adobe Developer Connection entitled Six reasons to use ActionScript 3.0. This one is a quick and useful read (the links at the bottom are very useful, too).
gTween is a new programmatic tweening engine built for ActionScript 3 developers from the ground up: instance-oriented, standard event model, multiple timing modes, proxy interface, interruptible, sequencing, resource managed, global and per instance pausing, and a whole lot more.
Flash Player 10 (”Astro”) Debug version is out. You can find it here: http://opensource.adobe.com/svn/opensource/flex/sdk/branches/3.0.x/in/player/10/. I the a previous article I explained how you can build a Flash Player 10 application using Flex SDK and here it is: http://www.flexer.info/2008/05/21/how-to-build-flash-player-10-applications-using-flex-sdk/. From now on we are looking for new Flash Player 10 applications…
We’re looking for an AS3 coder to come and work with us on a short term project here in sunny Brighton. It’s a great chance to get to know us all at Plug-in Media, and it could turn into a permanent job, if it all works out well. We’re building a flashy micro-site for a [...]
I was just heading over to Hank’s article on the situation with EcmaScript 4.0. The short of it is: it’s been drop kicked for good, leaving Adobe with decisions to make. As you read, Adobe had put alot into being standards compliant with AS3 and for obvious good reasons. The speculation [...]

I was digging up some really old links while preparing for my Flash Forward presentation. Ran across Gabriel Mulzer’s old site, http://www.voxangelica.net. Amazing, it’s still up there. Remember the ice queen? I learned the basics of 3D from a chapter Gabriel wrote in some book by Friends of ED back in those days. Wonder what he’s [...]
View the full-resolution version at screencast.com. Jing is a wonderful, free, cross-platform app from Techsmith for recording screen captures and screencasts. It lets you share your recordings immediately (without a separate encoding process) through Techsmith's screencast.com screencast hosting service, Flickr, and via your own web server with FTP access. One thing I couldn't get it [...]

I recently received a support query on Flint regarding garbage collection. In discussions on the forum I was reminded that many Actionscript developers don't know how the Flash Player's garbage collection works...

This FDT update makes me so happy that I have to post about it. The Powerflasher FDT developers implemented the new Vector.<T> syntax. Hooray — we can make full use of the Vector class! FDT is implementing it also in a nice way. So for instance if you have a Vector.<int> named vec and you write [...]
You know, i’ve been to quite a few Flash conferences ( not as many as Grant or Keith however ), and I’ve often wondered what it’d be like to put on a conference - what would I do with it? How would it be different and, for love of God - why another one?! I [...]
I have started working on AS3C at the end of last year. After a quick prototype the development stagnated and I added just several fixes and tests to the code. Basically I started AS3C as a complete C# newcommer and because of that the code is very ugly. Due to the fact that I do not [...]
You know it’s pretty sad when your parents have to beg. But it’s shameful when they’re begging you for work you do on a daily, if not a nightly basis! So, since they’re heading out to do a show in California in a week, I had to get something out there. I’d intended [...]
If you’ve never played N+, you should check it out. It’s a really well done game: http://www.thewayoftheninja.org/ N+ started as N, a Flash based game created by MetaNet software. It later became a very popular XBox Live Arcade game, and is now about to be released for the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP. I’ve played the Flash version [...]
A quine is a programm emitting its own source-code. I guess this is the most simple variant one could produce. package { import flash.display.Sprite; /** * @author Joa Ebert */ public class Main extends Sprite { public function Main() { var i: int; var c: Function = String.fromCharCode; var q: Array = [ 'package', '{', '\timport flash.display.Sprite', '', '\t/**', '\t * @author Joa Ebert', '\t */', '\tpublic class Main extends Sprite', '\t{', '\t\tpublic function Main()', '\t\t{', '\t\t\tvar i: [...]
Much has been written about the recent announcement of Google and Adobe working together to make Flash content indexed and searchable. Much written, with no real concrete answers. Lots of tests (A very good one done by Peter Elst), a contest held by Ryan Stewart (Flexmagically Searchable, FTW!), and some well formed opinions from [...]
