I’m here at day one of Dreamforce 2008, Salesforce.com’s annual conference. During Marc Benioff’s keynote they announced the new Force.com Sites technology for Salesforce hosted websites which can integrate with Salesforce data. At the end of the keynote Marc brought out Neil Young to talk about LincVolt, an open community for converting gasoline [...]

There have been a ton of new specs added for Flex 4 lately, so I thought I’d grab the most recent version of the Flex 4 SDK to see what’s changed since I last checked. I currently have the Flex 4 SDK set up to run in Flex Builder 3, so I just added some components [...]
Since I’m frequently at conferences meeting cool people I thought it would be fun to start recording videos of some of the great things I get to see in my travels. For lack of a more creative title I’m just calling these “RIA Cowboy Videos”. This first video is from AjaxWorld 2008 where [...]
Three new specifications have been added for Flex 4 (Gumbo). Read about them here: Arbitrary Type Interpolation New Effects for Components and Graphics 3D Effects Support
Something I’ve often wanted in AS3 is a strongly typed proxy: an object that implements a known interface with typed methods, but where very method results in the invocation of some method like invokeMethod(methodName:String, args:Array). AS3 does have a Proxy class, but unlike Java’s class of the same name, an AS3 Proxy doesn’t implement [...]

At the JAOO conference in Aarhus, Denmark I was able to co-present with Josh Holmes from Microsoft about the Architecture of RIA. This presentation was technology agnostic so we didn’t talk about specific implementations using platforms like Flex / Flash or Silverlight. Josh has posted the presentation slides and detailed notes on his [...]
I’ve run into this a few times, and I keep forgetting about it each time. Here’s the problem: I’m trying to scale a SimpleButton object that uses 9-slice skins, and the 9-slice just won’t work. button = new SimpleButton(); addChild(button); button.upState = new upSkin(); button.overState = new overSkin(); button.downState = new downSkin(); button.width = getCalculatedWidth(); What am I doing wrong? It turns [...]

I have an immediate need of a Flex Developer starting as soon as Monday.  It’s for a web based product launching in January.  It’s 40 hours a week and lasts till end of January.  You’ll be working with me, one other Flex Developer, and 2 server-side Python Developers.  Work can be done remotely (I work remotely), although, [...]
That’s right kiddies, I just got bit by the new security restrictions in Flash Player 10.  A developer I’m working with claimed his new image save feature worked.  I tried it, and it didn’t.  This morning, another developer sings praise in an email chain, and I’m like huh?  I try again, and get the: Error #2176: [...]
The shout “Drill, Baby, Drill” reminded me to put out the Flex drill down chart sample. One benefit of applying RIA technologies is for data visualization. Flex framework comes with fairly rich set of charting tools. A drill down chart is very good way of looking into data from different levels. If you happened to [...]
I was out for the ActionScript Conference so I've missed the news: Flex 3.2 ( 3.2.0.3643) is on the way! A new nightly builds of 3.2 has been released and it's available now. You can read the changes provided by Flex 3.3.0.3643 on this page. I just want to remember that Flex 3.2 release is part of the long-term Marshall plan.
To celebrate its 5000th Facebook Flex fan, Adobe is giving away a free MacBook Air and a copy of Creative Suite 4 Master Collection. For your chance to win, become a fan of the Adobe Flex page, allow access of the contest application, and answer a three-question quiz about Adobe Flex. Answer all the questions correctly and you'll be officially entered for a chance to win one of 4 copies of Flex Builder 3 Professional, as well as the grand prize, a free MacBook Air, and copies of CS4 Master Collection and Flex Builder 3 Professional. Unfortunately, this contest is only available to participants in North America. It may be opened up to residents of other countries in the future.
