Today I created a little game that can be played in the Flash CS3 IDE. It is an extension for Flash CS3 (mxp file) that adds a new panel to the interface. You can access the panel by going to Window > Other Panels > BugZap. The game pretty simple but quite addictive. You move the [...]
Jason Bartholme posted a great list of AIR Resources on his blog that will keep you busy for days. Topics include Getting Started with AIR Tutorial section, a collection of sample AIR applications as well as a list of articles and blog links.
How cool, I just heard from Brajeshwar on Twitter that The GAE SWF Project is currently the featured application on the Google App Engine Application Gallery. I released the proof of concept Flex 3 client late last night after the initial Flash 9 client release last week and I'm look forward to writing more about it [...]
When building Java services there is always need for handling exceptions thrown by all kind of sources. Wether those are ConstraintViolationException thrown by wrong database queries, NullPointerException thrown by wrong data manipulations or any other exceptions, all of them should end up handled in the Flex application calling the services. One wrong usage of data transfer [...]
Each time I tell that Flex 3 is open source, during my Flex 3 courses and sessions, people don't believe it. So I copy the entire Flex 3 SDK libraries into a new Flex 3 project and show them the actionscript classes fo the SDK. Then I go ahead and tell that not only the standard Flex 3 SDK is open source, but also the charting controls, the AdvancedDataGrid classes and all the stuff that come with the Professional version of Flex Builder 3 are open source. In order to open the data visualization source code we must have these two requirements
Today during a presentation about the use of Flex in enterprise scenarios, while I was illustrating the benefits of using the factory mechanism of BlazeDS to integrate it with Spring, a developer asked me why use Spring for Flex development (I guess he does not come from the Java world). I think that the answer could be obvious to most of you but I want to share my thoughts with you about that topic.

I’ve been skimming through the Adobe AIR for JavaScript Developers pocket book, and toying with the idea of creating the idea of an HTML/JS based application. Looking at the actual code examples kind of put me off though. JavaScript is so primitive - no classes, no typed variables. I remember the hoops you need to [...]
I just updated The GAE SWF Project to add the proof-of-concept Google App Engine Flex 3 client. The source code download now includes the source code for the Flex project. The Flex client works exactly like the Flash 9 client and shares an almost identical codebase. 99% of the framework is the same. I'm going [...]
I am shamelessly plugging this for the Acrobat Users Group The PDF Forms and LiveCycle Designer templates Contest is an opportunity to win yourself some prizes while sharing examples of your PDF Forms design and/or technical expertise. See here for more information.
An article which Jon Rose and I wrote called “Top 10 Mistakes when building Flex Applications” was recently published on InfoQ.com. Let us know what you think!
Most HD cameras have an "un-sharpen/sharpen" mode. To sharpen your footage is asking for the camera to compress the input, which produces a slightly jagged, or bit mapped edge. Setting your camera to un-sharpen provides a cleaner shot and will improve the keying process.

Well… as I had mentioned in one of my earlier posts, I am basically a Java programmer and hence when it comes to programming in ActionScript, I realize that the bits of code that I take for granted in Java are things I need to ponder about a little when they are to be coded [...]
I have just installed the XHTML Video Embed plugin for WordPress, written by SaltwaterC. It allows you to embed Flash videos from sites like YouTube and Google Video in to your WordPress blog easily, and the resulting HTML code will be XHTML compliant. The syntax is as follows … Here is a test, using Philip Kerman’s Why ActionScript [...]

In the previous post in this series, I showed how we can use a second class to access the ModelLocator singleton. This enables instances of this second class to be created, modified, bound to and disposed of as often as one wishes while maintaining the integrity of the data in the core singleton. Each instance of the second class mirrors the data in the singleton, modifying the data in an instance modifies the singleton, and modifications to the singleton are immediately reflected back out to every instance of the second class...

I’ve just come across a little online quiz where you can test your ActionScript 3.0 knowledge. It’s a site that accompanies the Learning ActionScript 3.0 book from O’Reilly. It’s not a particulary comprehensive quiz, more of a bit of fun. I managed to get full marks on most sections, but it looks like I need to [...]
The Adobe AIR 1 for JavaScript Developer pockek guide has been updated to Adobe AIR 1.0 and it's ready to donwload.
Having a fantastic time here in Toronto, although in a supreme display of poor planning my session is at 9am this morning! Never fear! We shall fight the hangovers from the awesome party last night (thanks Influxis) and produce more crazy particle effects! As ever, bring your laptop [...]
Yipee! Ordered my Flash on the Beach 08 ticket this morning. The tickets went on sale this weekend (just gone) and already 150 tickets have been sold.
