ESRI is an industry leader in the GIS space, and their ArcGIS Server provides Internet and Web oriented GIS and spatial data services for your own applications. ESRI has created ArcGIS API for Flex to allow Flex developers to leverage the power of ArcGIS in their own applications. The API is in beta now, and there are lots of nice samples posted online. Thanks to Jason Harris for bringing this one to my attention.
PS Did you notice that the ESRI sites linked to above are powered by ColdFusion?
Recently Adobe has published on the Flex Developer Center some articles taken from my Flex 3 book, Flex Solutions: Essential Techniques for Flex 2 and 3 Developers.

Friday, 25th of July 2008, we had another Romanian Flex User Group meeting. We did meet in a pub, the atmosphere was relaxed. We spoke about Flex/AIR applications, future ones and released ones, and we also spoke about Fx{r} and how can we improve it.

I'm just back from my holidays (two awesome days spent at the Seychelles islands) and I've found the great news about the announcements of Flex 4 SDK and Thermo at MAX Conference 2008 (from Matt Chotin blog):
The Flex development team has been very busy lately and last night they posted a ton of code and documentation on the next version of the Flex framework codenamed "Gumbo". "Gumbo" is the framework that will enable much richer application UI and break free of the more rigid look and feel of todays Flex applications. It is also the framework that will be powering applications made with "Thermo".

There are some interesting things happening for the next release of Flex. If you were at one of the MAX conferences last year you might have already seen Ely Greenfield talk about the Flex roadmap, now there’s a video about Flex “Gumbo” up on Adobe TV.

Tim Anderson has written an article for The Register entitled Consume .NET services without Silverlight describing how he built a Flex app that uses a .NET back-end using Web Services. Thanks to Joel Stobart for bringing this one to my attention.

There's not a lot written about using text fields (or any other display object) in a programmatic skin. What there is often suggests you have to add the text field as a child of the skin's parent. But it's actually a lot simpler than that...
