…and end the drawNow madness. I knew something was SERIOUSLY wrong when I read in the official docs (Part 3) from Adobe that if your code doesn’t work correctly, try using “drawNow”, and failing that, “validateNow”. What do you mean “try”? What… the… hell…
Got a background music on your Flash website? It would be nice to add a tiny equalizer in the footer. Or maybe you're developing an AS3 application that features MP3 playback? An equalizer will surely be useful in there too...
Good news! I’ve integrated my new 3D line drawing algorithm into a Papervision LineMaterial class! Bad news! It probably won’t work for very long… the reason? Well Papervision is going through an exciting transformation that I’m not sure I can talk about right now… but suffice it to say, it’ll be pretty cool. But in [...]
Do you have a Flash, Flex, or ActionScript job to post? Post it on the OSFlash Job Board. I've just relaunched the OSFlash Job Board and all jobs listings are 50% off this week if you use the coupon code RELAUNCH. This expires on April 1st, 2008 (no joke!) If you want to get notified [...]
I love the Line3D in papervision, but wouldn’t it be great if it actually got larger as it came towards you? Currently the lines are just drawn using the Flash drawing API, and the line’s thickness is the same no matter how far away it is. I’ve been working on a new line drawing algorithm. [...]
After the Computer Arts article last month, you can now see my full particle presentation over on lynda.com. It’s a screen-cast of my presentation at Flashforward in Boston last September. You can download the actual files from this session here, or get the latest updated versions here. I’ll be slowly phasing this presentation out in [...]
While I was writing the book, I met a few bugs I would like to share with you so that you don't get crazy on your code I will start with an annoying bug concerning the Loader class in the Flash player (9,0,115,0). You have to watch out with the concept of reparenting with the Loader [...]
I just got back from a lovely FlashBrighton evening full of Arduino hacking and Wiimote fun. Arduino is an open-source board that connects to your computer via USB. Add a breadboard, some LEDs, and other components and you can create all sorts of lovely things with it. You program it using the Arduino scripting environment which [...]
I have to support this. Thanks to all the people who have made the impossible happen with all the amazing audio stuff available but now I think it’s time for Adobe to step in. The issue with SOUND_COMPLETE is of course big but frankly Sound.loadBytes( ) is all I want. Adobe, MAKE SOME NOISE
Andre Michelle is making some noise. After playing with PopForge, I have nothing but total amazement of what this guy does, there is no reason not to support him in his quest to get Adobe to fix some serious Sound API problems.
Andre Michelle is leading a campaign called Adobe MAKE SOME NOISE that is calling for Adobe to take some action and fix a pretty big problem with the Actionscript Sound API in the latest Flash Player and also to rally together support to show Adobe that alot of people need/want more control over sound with [...]
Probably the first critical update issued from Adobe about possibly vulnerabilities in the Flash player. The December issues listed can be found here. April sees a new Flash Player update to resolve some cross-site scripting problems in the current v115 Flash Player.
A couple of weekends ago, I did a presentation for The Chennai Cold Fusion User Group (CCFUG Homepage). Am posting the ppt here. The presentation covered the basics - intro to RIAs, intro to Adobe Flex, a couple of examples and a little bit about Adobe AIR. Check it out… if you have nothing else [...]
Edit: Scrap this post. Mr Peters just shown me that... PLAIN TEXT Actionscript: SuperClass.prototype.isPrototypeOf( SubClass.prototype ); ...does the same thing. Bonus!
I have been thinking about some of the concepts and patterns described in the Domain-Driven Design book and how they could be implemented in a Flex or AIR environment. One thing that interests me in particular is the use of a Repository as a container for Domain Objects. In short, a Repository is responsible for fetching, [...]
I’m just putting the finishing touches to my session for this afternoon, more particle craziness, this time in Amsterdam. If you want to work along with me then you can download the source files here.
Following up on Douglas McCarroll's modified Cairngorm Store update, I thought I'd take this a step further and add a Prana application context to configure the business delegates and the service locator. This example has support for mock delegates that contain hardcoded local data and is also able to connect to php services using Remote [...]
I had the opportunity to mess about with some new AS3 libraries a few days ago. After doing this basic experiment I figure that a bold statement is in order. I reckon what BitmapData did for Flash 8, the ByteArray will make up for Flash 9. Ok so myabe not so bold and a little bit late but ByteArray is defintely powerful.
I’m speaking at 360Flex next week, Feburary 25th at 4:00 pm. My topic is officially called “Big and Famous: How to Succeed as an Independent Developer”. My topic will cover: Why and how to become an independent developer Why and how to make money Why and how to build your personal brand Why and how to use [...]
