Bradley is back in session. I have two classes I’m teaching this semester, so it’s going to be a busy one. MM365 – Designing with Web Standards, this is one I have taught for 3 years now. It’s focused around CSS, XHTML and some simple JS, with an emphasis on using best practives and writing [...]

A friend of mine recently asked me to help him troubleshoot some performance problems with his Flex application. In his scenario he had a large list of data and wanted to filter the data such that each time the search string grew by a character the complex filter would only be run on the [...]

At least that’s what the UK’s Advertising Standards Agency says. They pulled an iPhone ad because it claimed to give you “all parts of the Internet”. But the omission of Flash and Java was enough for the agency to call BS on that claim. Read here: http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/27/uks-advertising-standards-authority-yanks-iphone-ad-for-being-m/ And I’m not Adobe, but yeah, I’m feeling pretty smug.
Not sure if this is new information to anyone but I stumbled across this little gem when I did a Google search for “get flash player” today. I was surprised to see that the 2nd link was a Microsoft URL (go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=6457) which nicely redirects to the Adobe Flash Player download page. [...]
Don’t we all have trouble remembering faces of some acquaintance we’ve met in the elevator, after a very long time or after a very brief duration in the recent past? Facesaerch (not Facesearch) is a “people face search engine” that comes to our rescue during such times. You can search for any name and the engine, [...]
One of my favorite Interactive “places” is North Kingdom. They’ve had great sites/games, most recently the Get the Glass game. They’ve come up with another game to promote Mentos called Kiss Fight that has great little video cut scenes, awesome 3D characters/scenes, and pretty hilarious game play. They never cease to amaze [...]
It’s enough to warm the cockles of one’s heart. ActionScript nerds around the globe can celebrate their graduation to “real programmer” status (whatever that means). I’d seen reference to this around the time of Tamarin announcement, but its nice to be reminded and see a link to the source. The big question is what’s going [...]
So you fire up your browser, you type "Book a flight to Chicago next Monday to Thursday, no red-eyes, the cheapest. Then, email my friends the itinerary and add it to my calendar". Your browser responds with: This is the aim of the Ubiquity project at Mozilla, which aims to parse natural language queries to create on-the-fly mashups. In the words of the Mozilla team, it's about "connecting the Web with language in an attempt to find new user interfaces that could make it possible for everyone to do common Web tasks more quickly and easily." This is a...

Acrobat 9 supports the embedding of Flash/Flex based SWF files within PDF documents. In addition to supporting SWF playback, this capability exposes functionality found only in Acrobat, as explained in this post by Acrobat Technical Evangelist Joel Gearci.
I’ve tried not to get too riled up over the demise of the ECMAScript 4 draft spec and the political accusations that have been chucked back and forth. You know, the whole MS, Yahoo, Apple vs Adobe, Mozilla, Google soap opera. Anyway, I’ve read quite a bit of the inflammatory stuff over the last couple [...]
LibraryThing’s Tim Spalding might just have renewed my belief in transparency. Skip the spin, deliver the truth and stand by your convictions with competitors and users. Transparency has been a trendy web 2.0 business tenet for awhile and I’ve been a huge fanboi, but after reading Tim’s post I realized I had only seen half [...]
