Click here to Run Demo ** I have been playing with the new Pixel Bender stuff and have come up with a neat little sample app using some of the filters from the Pixel Bender Exchange. ** PLEASE NOTE: THIS SAMPLE REQUIRES FLASH PLAYER 10 AND A WEB CAM!! a2a_linkname="Pixel [...]
I had an errand to run yesterday and my peer at ESRIA, Brian Riley, had some interesting news, so it was a perfect time to call. After we discussed his good news, I then veered the conversation to lack of a formalized Mediator in Cairngorm to get his thoughts. Also known as “Abstract [...]
One of the coolest features of Flex 3 is framework caching. But, I wonder how many are actually using it. I just enabled it on an application that we are releasing tomorrow and it took the application size from around 1mb to only 531k. That is almost a 50% reduction in download for users [...]
I’m going to start working on the the FXCTextArea again, I getting a lot of requests lately. I started a the component sometime again, and ran into a lot of issue in calculating positions of characters and so on. But I’m going to target for FP10 this time.  I think it will solve a couple [...]
Flex and JSF have both been widely adopted by the Java Community. In many instances developers must choose between the two technologies. Today Exadel announced a new product called Fiji which alleviates this decision by providing a simple and seamless way to integrate Flex and JSF. This is very exciting news for Java developers. For [...]
What the hell… everyone has been ordered by a Higher Power (probably the same one that runs AA) to blog about Google Chrome… guess I’d better do that. But you’ve read 1,845 other posts about Google Chrome already so I’ll be brief. 1. Read the Scott McCloud comic — great to see such a [...]

Everything is set up. My flight, my hotel and my partecipation at the first edition of The ActionScript Conference 2008 in Singapore. I'm pretty excited because I'm sure I'll meet new developers that I've never meet before. And then it will be my first time in Singapore :)
Hi all — not a good summer for blog posts, as it’s turned out, but an excellent summer in every other way.  More news soon, please stay tuned: new products and new projects to talk about! A more short-term comment here: Marc Hughes is giving a talk to the Boston Flex User Group next Tuesday (Sept. [...]

I am a big XM Radio fan (integrated XM Radio has been a prerequisite when purchasing my last two cars, and I am addicted to Channel 130, POTUS 08 right now). I just clicked on the XM Radio shop link, and discovered that the page (complete with the product selector) is running in the Flash player. And that loading bar makes it look suspiciously like it's powered by Flex.
I'm planned to spend this weekend to study the new FXG 1.0 specification released by Adobe on the Open Source site. As you probably know, FXG will be used by the next Flex 4 to improve the designer/developer workflow for skinning elements. In Flex 4 in fact there is a brand new graphics tag library that uses FXG and that follows very closely the Flash Player 10 rendering model.
Bradley is back in session. I have two classes I’m teaching this semester, so it’s going to be a busy one. MM365 – Designing with Web Standards, this is one I have taught for 3 years now. It’s focused around CSS, XHTML and some simple JS, with an emphasis on using best practives and writing [...]
A friend of mine recently asked me to help him troubleshoot some performance problems with his Flex application. In his scenario he had a large list of data and wanted to filter the data such that each time the search string grew by a character the complex filter would only be run on the [...]
I came across a video of a segment that aired on Fox Business News about HotPads.com, which is an online housing search website (rentals, sales, etc). As I was watching the clip I noticed that beautiful little preloader we’ve all come to know and love HotPads uses a custom map engine they developed [...]
Note: Just a short post to save your hair from turning gray (I know mine just did) If you ever run into a "Unable to access UserTransaction in DataService" error when working with LCDS on Tomcat 5.5.x+, make sure you configured the Java Open Transaction Manager (JOTM) correctly. You can do this by adding the following [...]
