When I first started looking at Django about two months ago, I was lamenting about how difficult it seemed (in comparison to PHP, for example) to get a simple data-driven project up and running and deployed. (Much of the difficulty is in getting MySQL running.) Since then, of course, Google released Google App Engine and the [...]
When I was first starting out with Google App Engine (GAE), I wrote a short post detailing my thoughts on whether to use Django or Google's own webapp framework for GAE projects. In that post, I concluded that "there isn't a compelling reason to use Django at the moment with GAE". Since then, I've re-evaluated [...]
I was very much looking forward to attending Scotch on the Rocks this year, and participating in the keynote...I believe from the organisers this would have made me the longest running presenter at Scotch on the Rocks! "Unfortunately" however, I have to attend meetings in Rome, so the Adobe Consulting team will be attending without me...however, we've got a great line up of presenters and presentations, so if you're attending the event, I'd highly recommend you checking out their presentations and introducing yourself to the team: Borre Wessel has been presenting at several conferences this year across Europe, including Norway...
What can you say about 2M08? Its amazing how fast the conference has grown up in just a few years. Koen, Wouter and the rest of the team did an outstanding job and with the help of the sponsors made it an event that you can easily compare to many of the well known [...]
Wednesday morning at 6:00 as the day begins… I’ll be on an airplane. That means I need to be at the airport some time around 4:00 am. That means I need to leave home around 3:00 am. That means I have to get up around 2:00 am. That means I’ll probably just stay up. I’ll be in Japan til June 9. [...]
There are a couple of user-experience design principles that apply to so many of the Rich Internet Applications that we develop:   Content over Chrome Direct Manipulation   When we speak about content over chrome, it is a reminder that the chrome of the application - the menus, the toolbars, the scrollbars, trees, etc - shouldn't be allowed to suffocate and overwhelm the content that the user wishes to engage with.  The principle of direct manipulation often fits hand in glove with content over chrome; direct manipulation reminds us that rather than users using buttons, controls, menubars and sliders...
It's always embarassing to look back at your blog, and see the last post from several months ago describe a well-intentioned return to blogging on a more regular basis.  So, if it's all the same, I'm going to forego that future embarassment, while neither ignoring the fact that it has been some time since I posted last, nor predict the frequency with which today's well-intentioned return will continue. But for those of you that were once regular readers of my musing, it's still me, the iteration::two, Flash Remoting and J2EE, Cairngorm and Flex guy, who is now Technical Director...
I'll write this up now since I was on vacation last week. As you probably know, last week we released the beta of Flash Player 10, code named Astro. While we're waiting for Flex 4 to take full advantage of...
Thomas Joos has done it again, after doing one for FITC Amsterdam and Toronto this time he has worked on a Flash Lite mobile guide for 2M08. I’ve just been playing around with the app and its really useful, you get an overview of the conference schedule, a map of the venue, information about the [...]
Another cool generative art program, for 3D. http://structuresynth.sourceforge.net/index.php Actually, this is where I got the link to ContextFreeArt, as this is described as a “3D version of ContextFree”. Haven’t tried this one myself, but looks pretty cool.
Just ran across this program, which is pretty neat. http://www.contextfreeart.org/index.html Reminds me a bit of my LSysWeb on Chaos-101.
This years Adobe Community Summit has sadly come to an end — since we’re all under NDA we’re unfortunately not at liberty to discuss what was shown but it certainly was impressive. The group of user group manager and community experts is definitely growing, the Park conference room at the Adobe headquarters in San Jose [...]
I love reading some analysis about the evolution of the RIA space but what is it with tech reporters these days? There seems to be very little research done and some absolutely ludicrous comparisons made. Here are some examples highlighted by fellow bloggers:   John Dowdell Brajeshwar Oinam Mrinal Wadhwa   To avoid any confusion, here’s a little cheat sheet: - Adobe [...]
Noticed recently I’ve been using Twitter for well over a year now (February 5th 2007 to be exact), and some might say I’ve become addicted. I’m closing in on the 2500 twitter post mark, have about 465 followers and follow 241 of those myself. Now to be honest, things have come to a point [...]

I’ll be speaking at FlashBelt again for the fourth straight year in June. I’ve spoken at this conference every year since I moved to Minneapolis in 2005. Its a great conference that has brings in both local and national attendees. My session is titled Distribution and Installation Strategies for AIR and will [...]
I'm honored and humbled every time I look through the list of stellar speakers we have confirmed to present at the Singularity web conference. As such, I want to take a moment every week to highlight a new speaker, starting this week with Tim O'Reilly. I had the honor of meeting Tim several years ago during [...]
I hate blog spammers. Normally, you can't really track down who is responsible for blog spam and there's very little you can do about it. You get angry and delete the comment and feel wholly inadequate. However, today, I saw some spam on my blog from a company called First Rate based in New Zealand, [...]
For the next week I’ll be in San Jose, CA for the annual Adobe Community Summit with fellow community experts and user group managers. This is always one of my personal highlights of the year, we get to see some of the exciting projects that are being worked on and hang out with project managers, engineers [...]
